  1. I'm an outsider here... have been in all the countries I have lived ... and in the process of my education as a journalist in New Zealand, I put myself in the place of having to confront the reality of the privilege I enjoyed in having been raised in that country, which privilege had been taken/obtained through trickery, dishonesty, disregard of a Treaty and cultural genocide over the span of two hundred years before, by white people with whom I had no connection....

The same thing had happened in Singapore (where I lived for 2 years in the 70s) to the Malay people...

I saw the same thing in Australia with its Aboriginal people, when I was living there from 96 to 04...

And this is the reality of life here in the US... the prosperity of all other racial groups - white, black (even with slavery), asian, hispanic/latino etc... has been brought on the backs of the native people of this country... land grabbing, racial and cultural genocide...

This is the first wound ('original sin') of this country and I would like to see it acknowledged and remedied as far as possible... I would like our children to learn the truth.... its impossible to turn back the clock and undo it, but it is possible to Recognise, take Responsibility and make Reparations.... we do not need to be bowed down with 'white guilt', but let us all speak and own the truth....

In my view, all other forms of injustice in this country are secondary to this primal injustice....

And I agree that injustice and working towards equity across all groups needs to be day in - day out work, not just reserved for a particular day or month on the calendar...
